The online semester exams for these students ended in the third week of July. Colleges were awaiting the nod from the higher education department to begin online classes for 2021-22.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the representatives of the Consortium of Self-Financing Professional and Arts and Science Colleges in Tamil Nadu, the minister said the government would take steps to make the weightage for internal and written exams in engineering colleges uniform in all colleges.
“While Anna University campuses give 50% weightage for internal and written exams, the weightage for affiliated colleges is 20% for internal and 80% for written exams. The consortium gave representation to make weightage for internal and written exam uniform for all colleges,” Ponmudi said.
On the number of applications, the minister said 41,363 applications were received for engineering admissions counselling in two days. “We expect more applications in the coming days as TNEA gave time till August 24 to apply for engineering counselling. For government arts and science colleges, 1,26,748 students have registered in the past two days,” he said.
There are 1,00,102 seats available in 143 government arts and science colleges. The directorate of collegiate education facilitates admissions to these colleges online through www.tngasa.in and www.tngasa.org portal.
“Besides applying online, students can also make individual applications to government arts and science colleges,” he added.
He further said the reopening of colleges would be announced in consultation with chief minister and medical experts after Covid-19 cases subside. “Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we will direct all colleges not to collect more than 75% of tuition fees for this year,” Ponmudi said.
The minister said the higher education department is also considering removing the norm which mandates BE and B Tech students to clear all papers in first year to be eligible to get promoted to final year.
